Create a Google Earth KML file

  1. Go to https://earth.google.com.

  2. Find the location that you want to map using the search box in the upper left corner.

You can search the Google Earth map like you would Google Maps. For example, you can search by:

    • Lat/Long (example: 47.666, -122.351)
    • City (example: Seattle)
    • Address (example: Fremont Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103)
    • Point of interest (example: Space Needle)
  3. Click File > New local KML file (or press Control + K). Alternatively, click + New, then select Local KML file in the dialog that pops up, then click Create.

  1. Rename the new KML file you are creating. Click ⋮ Show more options > Rename, type the the name of the file, then click Enter.

  1. Ensure that you are in the 2D view. If you are in the 3D view, the Google Maps Content Partners (GMCP) team will not be able to process your data.

  1. Begin creating data.

    D.  Click Save to project.

    E.  After clicking Save to project, you will be taken to an edit card in which you can change the name and description of the feature. This is optional, but we highly recommend that you include the name and any relevant/useful information.

If you want to edit a feature's name or description later, simply click on the feature and press Edit in the upper right side.

    F.  Once your feature is created, it will be added under the project in the left hand panel.
