How can I turn completely off the "Suspicious sign-in attempt prevented" alerts?
0
Hi, I have a "Suspicious sign-in attempt prevented" alert, and although I said it was me, the access is still being blocked.
Unfortunately, I have no other way of proving it was me because the account is being accessed through code. And that is done through an iOS mobile application.

The app is just supposed to send emails under the click of a button, but google blocks this, even though I said "It was me".

PS: I have already turned on "allow less secure apps to access account".
Please help, as this is urgent.

Hi George, try clearing Captcha: visit https://accounts.google.com/DisplayUnlockCaptcha and sign in with the Gmail username and password.  If necessary (it's usually not), enter the letters in the distorted picture then press Continue. This will allow ten minutes for the app to register as an approved connection.  Note that you must use the account you are trying to use in the app - if the browser is already signed into another account, you must sign out first.

Hi Keith,
That is great advice, thank you, Do you know whether it's possible to extend those 10 minutes? Because I'm not really sure when the person will click that button - it could be from 7PM till 12AM so unless there's another way, I should click on the button to enable connection once every 10 minutes?

Once you make a connection after "unlock CAPTCHA", Google will remember the IP, so you don't need to keep clicking it.

A better, more reliable solution is to set up 2-step verification on the Google account, then generate an App Password to use with the SMTP connection.

So I can only use unlockCaptcha when I'm trying to log in from the source? In that case, I can't use that, because the account is being used under the push of a button in a mobile application, there is nothing I can change in terms of code, or connection, I just want to turn off all security measures Google uses for my account. Is there any way to do that?

Many thanks

If the connections could be coming from multiple, random IP addresses, then the "unlock CAPTCHA" will not help, and you will get identity challenges, which prevent login, periodically, even with "less secure apps" enabled.  If the connections are always coming from a fixed IP (or, at least, the same subnet), then it should work.

As I explained, you can use an App Password to avoid the problem.  With an App Password, you should not get the identity challenges.

That would be useful for future cases, but in this case I can't use App Passwords as:
1)I can't contact the person using the iOS app sending emails under my account
2)Even if I could, they are not personally logging into my account, that is done automatically through code, they don't have access to any credentials and any way of entering the App PAssword.

So, your password is hard coded in your application?  Maybe you need to rethink the design. (E.g., the user could use their own account.)

In any case, if you have control of the code, there is an even better solution available.  You can use OAuth2 authentication.  Of course, each device will need to sign in and request permission, but it is more secure and will not require the application to store a password.

Yeah, the password is hardcoded.. I know it's very bad practice but it was the only quick solution my team could find as we needed the user to be anonymous (not storing any of their personal data). In the future, we'll redesign this based on your pieces of advice.
It's just a bit annoying that for some users, the data can't be sent through due to this security check. (which is great as a feature for gmail, don't get me wrong, but it would have been better for the purpose of our app if we could turn off this security block).

Since the password is hardcoded, although it's a very dodgy solution, the 2 step verification should work.  You just hard code the App specific password instead of the standard password.
