Child's account disabled; Google instructions about Family Link seem inconsistent 0 Recommended Answers 38 Replies 123 Upvotes

My daughter's account was disabled because she's under thirteen. Okay. So I need to add her under Family Link. I installed it on her iPhone, but can't get to the prompt because her account is disabled. Okay. I use the alternative instructions. It instructs me to retrieve the email from Google indicating the account was disabled and click through a link. But her account is disabled, meaning I can't get through to that email!

Am I crazy, or do all the solutions to the problem only work under the hypothesis that the problem hadn't occurred?

If you change the date on a "false date" child's account to qualify for Family Link, then Google will delete this account, (for breach of Google policies), with very little chance of getting the account back, although some claim to have succeeded.

Age requirements for Google accounts, and a recovery method if wrong age entered is at https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1350409?hl=en    See also https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1333913

(For your information, https://www.gmail.com/mail/help/intl/en/program_policies_redline.html lists Google policies, but is not very specific regarding underage accounts. Multiple "catch all" clauses there.)

You will find that the credit card route is the best way to go, and you will have to again put in a false age.  You may have to also clear the cache in your browser, before doing this.  There is no guarantee that the account, and any data therein, can be recovered. It appears that the credit card may need to be in the name of the account holder as well;  this could be a problem.

It would appear that this account could then be added to Family Link  (if it is recovered), but your child would need to give permission to be added, and could rescind that permission with Google at any time, due to the perceived age being older than legal requirements for underage accounts.  You need to be aware of this.

"Can I use Family Link to supervise my teenager?
Yes, Family Link can be used to supervise teenagers (children over the age of 13 or applicable age of consent in your country). Unlike children under the age of consent, teenagers have the ability to stop supervision at any time, but if they do you will be notified and their devices will be temporarily locked and unusable."  https://families.google.com/familylink/faq/

If a problem for you, best leave the account as closed, and start a new account with Family Link.  Data cannot be transferred from the closed account.

Thanks for the reply. The age (twelve) should be correct, but I have no way of verifying this, as we can't log in.

How can this be checked?

Where are you logging in?  What error?

Again, thanks for the reply. I'm trying to log in through Chrome, both on a Win10 machine and an Android phone. I receive the following:

It looks like you're not old enough to have a Google Account without parental supervision. Learn more

If you entered the wrong birthday, update it now. Otherwise, your Google Account will be deleted in 3 days.

We were honest about her age, so I'm not going to lie. But certainly, there should be *some* method of getting her account under family link that doesn't require that we be able to sign in under her account.

My daughter is looking at seeing all of her writing and photos disappear *because we were honest*. I just want to put this under Family Link or whatever I need to do.

This is the sort of thing to which I'm referring:

1) I go to: https://support.google.com/families/answer/9055704?hl=en to add supervision to my child's account.

2) I click through to https://support.google.com/families/answer/9055704?hl=en to add her account to mine online.

3) It prompts me to sign in.

4) I get this (again):

It looks like you're not old enough to have a Google Account without parental supervision. Learn more

This is what I mean by "inconsistent." The steps to alleviate the problem are only applicable in the case in which the problem does not exist.

Isn't there someone who can help, after all the advertising dollars that Google has made from us?

As stated above

We can only offer general assistance here.

Solution is to lie about child's age.  What a crappy service.  I guess you do get what you pay for.  Maybe I will buy some Apple stock after all.  I thought Google was going to be competition for them.

I too have tried the suggestions they gave for those kids that have existing gmail accounts. One was to invite the child to become a family member but I have to wait for kid to accept the invitation. HOW?? Her account is disabled. I then tried using the Family Link app that too doesn't work because her account is disabled. It first stated when I downloaded it that I would get a prompt and to just enter in the code I saw on her screen. That never happened! I followed all their directions and none of them work because the account is disabled! I see time and again everyone asking the same thing but they are not giving an answer that actually works. I appreciate the child controls they want to add but you don't put something out there without a solid plan in place for those that already have children with gmail accounts. They need to fix this and fast. This is ridiculous all of us wouldn't be complaining of the same thing if what they wrote for us to do actually worked. I've been to many forums and barely a response from them and none of the responses actually help. Just links to the same directions that don't work.
