Password rejection for pop.gmail.com from all third-party clients on one of my gmail accounts
1
I have several gmail accounts & use Thunderbird as my client. Suddenly on April 9, I got password failure messages connecting to one of the accounts. It still won't work. I changed my password & it still doesn't work. It works fine on gmail in any browser, on my phone browsers & on my phone gmail account. It fails on Thunderbird and on Windows Live. Oddly, my wife is now getting password failed on smtp.gmail.com on her Windows Live & can't send. Hers also works fine on browsers & mobile gmail app. Help.

Go to your security settings and ensure you've allowed access for "Less Secure Apps".

Both mine and my wife's email accounts have been working properly for many years. Why should hers suddenly stop sending email & one of my half-dozen gmail accounts I manage through Thunderbird suddenly stop receiving - while the others, which all use pop.gmail.com, continue to work fine? Nothing was changed in any account's settings between when they all worked and one suddenly stopped receiving. ALL of my gmail accounts are set up with pop.gmail.com, port 995, connection security SSL/TLS, authentication method Normal Password. I've had this particular account working on the same settings for decades. If Thunderbird had a setting causing me to suddenly stop receiving emails suddenly at 12:35 AM Eastern time  on April 9, what would have had to change? Riddle me that! The problem is that pop.gmail.com stopped recognizing my password that had been updated on January 28, 2019. Even when I again updated my entire Google system password two days after the failure, everything else recognizes the new password, including Google gmail on a half-dozen desktop & mobile browsers as well as my mobile GMail account on my Samsung Note 8. When I tried to open my account on my wife's Live Mail client, it also refused to accept my password.

I need to have my pop.gmail.com password reset only for my third-party desktop clients to match the one that works with everything else Google and, at least, try to find out what glitch stopped this one account's receiving server connection stopped taking the password in the middle of the night one night. Was April 9 a full moon? Is this a POM-derived bug?

BTW, even if Thunderbird, which is a desktop app, not a browser app, DID have a security setting for "Less Secure Apps," which it doesn't. Why should it block only one of a number of gmail accounts that all use the same security settings - and do so when I am not even using the desktop?

Todd,

Email accounts are not browser specific, so maybe incorrect information is being entered. Perhaps an error memorized by the browser. Try clearing Cache and Cookies, then try again.
