Issue with Gmail in Outlook (sorry we couldn't sign you in to google - imap) 1 Recommended Answer 104 Replies 1176 Upvotes

This problem suddenly appeared four days ago. I'm using the most recent version of Oulook for Windows 10. A pop-up box from Google asks me for my password whenever I try to load my Gmail email, it then asks me to allow or deny Microsoft services and apps. Of course, I select 'Allow' but then I get an error message saying 'Sorry we couldn't sign you in to google - IMAP. Please try again later.' I have checked my google account to make sure less secure apps are allowed, and I have double checked my IMAP settings (all are fine). Does anyone know how to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance.

I just got this message too. I had used a VBA script in outlook to sort all of my 40,000 emails into folders for each sending domain with outlook set to 'work offline' and today when I signed in I was greeted with the same error.

Did you have a lot of change in your inbox, go offline for a day, or anything similar?

Thanks for replying. I did not make any big changes before this happened, although it did coincide with a Windows update (no idea if that's relevant).

I might try deleting the account in Outlook and setting it up from scratch, but I'm hesitant as it means re-downloading 5 Gb of emails from the server..

Same issue here. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with a large number of emails or any updates in Windows. I have two gmail accounts - both are now having the exact same issue! I deleted one and tried to rebuild - same problem!

ANYone? ANY thoughts? UGH!!!

I resolved this, it was related to our firewall and content filter blocking communication to Google's server. Check with your IT department or settings on firewalls, routers, and antivirus software.

Thanks, but can you be more specific? I have exactly the same issue at home, at work, and in other places, so it cannot simply be related to my work. Is it a Windows setting that needs to be adjusted?

If it's not related to one network, it is not a connection issue. A lot of the times when it is computer specific its because the outlook data file is corrupt.

Try changing the ports used for the account within the outlook account settings to use imap 993 and smtp 465. I think spa needs turned on both ways.

Thanks for your reply Alex. Unfortunately it does not look like Outlook data file corruption is a factor as I can't setup a brand new IMAP gmail account without hitting the exact same problem.

Anyone else? Other thoughts?

Still down and going crazy with this!
