Gmail automatically translates my emails 0 Recommended Answers 5 Replies 363 Upvotes

Gmail started automatically translating my emails. For about a second, I can read them in the original language (generally Spanish) and then it goes to English. I disabled (never enabled) automatic translation on Chrome and I used my language settings in Gmail to make sure it knows I read Spanish hoping that would disable auto translate. I'm thinking this is some experimental feature but it is very annoying.

Reload gmail, then select any message and it should appear above the content text of the email a Translation bar with a few options and tools for translating your emails (see attached image 1), if your email keeps translating automatically, because you probably mistakenly set it like this, so you'll then see on the translation bar an option: Don't automatically translate for... (see attached image 2) select it and reload gmail and it should by now not translate automatically but only when you ask for it again.

The auto translation also extends to label names. I have a Spanish label name that is auto translated. Where do I stop that from happening?

This might be because of a translation setting set for the whole (chrome) browser, not just for gmail. Have a look at the top right of the browser window and see if the translate icon appears there, like marked by red arrow in the following image:

And if yes, so when you click it you get some options available for this, select what needed (or if "always translate for this language" is marked with a check. select it again to turn it off.

Yikes I somehow activated the Translate portion in gmail and now it automatically changes my name - Kina to China. SO Annoying and I can't seem to change it.

Features like this are really really really annoying!!!!! The software (or the software engineer behind it) think they are smarter than you, so they make decisions for you.

I have been spending hrs finding out how to disable this stupid function that gmail forced me to use. I don't get the image as shown in the reply from user "From experience". I got a line, but without "Always translate: English" or "Don't automatically translate for: English".
