trying to delete all these email in the updates folder but it removes them from where they're stored. so I have duplicate or double the storage. How can I delete them without them being deleted everywhere else and prevent new emails from going in there? I have the box in settings for my inbox NOT selected for updates.

In Gmail, Go to settings--Manage Labels, then Updates.  Under "Show in label list" highlight Show; and under  "Show in message list" highlight Hide.  Then go back and open the inbox.  Your mail will be tagged as Updates.   Double click individually on the inbox messages.  When you open them, they should say Inbox and Updates with an X beside each.  Put an X on Updates to remove.

The category labels are still being applied to messages even if you do not have the inbox tab displayed.  With the tabs turned off, all your new e-mail goes into Primary (the only tab you can't turn off).

I’m having the same issue. I’m not using categories or labels and do not have them checked or using them in any filter but I have mail that shows up in Updates category\folder and not inbox. How caniget it to stop and go to inbox only??

Then you have something else setup to auto-archive some/all of your new messages so they don't show up in the Inbox (just OTHER labels).

Are there any filters listed in:  Settings -> Filters ?   Do ANY of them use the "skip the inbox" option?

Are there any forwarding accounts setup in:  Settings -> Forwarding ?

Do you access your account with an e-mail client (Outlook, Thunderbird, Pocomail, etc), a mobile app (iOS, Android, etc), an e-mail notifier, or any other add-on/tool/web-site/etc connected to your account?

Check Settings -> Accounts -> Change Account Settings -> Other Google account settings -> Security (left column) -> Third-party apps with account access -> Manage third-party access.  This MAY work as a direct link:  https://myaccount.google.com/u/0/permissions  .   Have you given account access to any other web-sites or utilities?

Please check the Details link below the Inbox (lower/right).  What are all the types of account access listed there (posting a screen-shot may best)?

No third party apps. No forwarding set. I did have some filters and 1 of them did skip the inbox and go to archive. That rule applied to these emails which are going to Updates category only. I have removed the filter and all others and am waiting for an e,all to see what happens. I still cannot seem to remove the category Updates though.

So other than using the web interface for some pictures, you don't use it at all to access your Gmail account?

BTW, neither of the pictures are applicable to the questions I asked above (they just system labels that all Gmail accounts have).

well i do now have to use the web login to gmail to see the emails that are going to update - just like you mentioned in your post - if I understood the problem you are to having.  your emails are going to the update folder/label and not sowing in the inbox, right?
