Deleted mails are still in All Mails and Important and under default labels like Updates 0 Recommended Answers 84 Replies 417 Upvotes

When I delete all mails from Spam and Deleted Items, the are still visible in other folders like Important and All Mails, as well as under some default system labels like Updates. So even when I think mails are deleted forever, I have thousands off deleted mails in soms strange folders, even from previous year. So I cannot delete my mails, unless I go trough thousands of mails manually in one of those strange folders. Please tell me how to get rid of deleted mails forever, or please solve this problem with GMail.

Are you deleting through the web interface or through an offline app of some kind?  Do you have any browser extensions or Gmail add-ons enabled?

I am deleting using the plain web interface as well as the Outlook client on laptop and smartphone. I see that there are different namings for Deleted Items and Trashcan, also in different languages, and one of these combinations seem to be the problem. If there is a folder for deleted items in a client that is not in the web interface (it may not be an IMAP folder), it is not deleted and stays forever in the special folders. This is just so confusing, so how can we fix this to always delete to the right trashcan in any client? I guess I should not use the option Empty Folder in Outlook on Deleted Items, but first move all these deleted items to the real Trash and then empty this one? This makes a difference, but it's not how it should work i.m.o.

When you delete messages from Gmail through IMAP, it just removes the current label.  To delete from the server through IMAP, you need to move the messages to the [Gmail]/Trash folder. You should be able to map the Outlook Deleted Items to that folder.

Thanks. I was also thinking about mapping, but it's just a workaround. To get rid of thousands of "not deleted" emails, I first marked all mails as read, then the mails in Inbox and Sent as unread, filtered on all read mails in the All Mails folder, and pressed delete. Luckily I now have only 150 mails left I want to keep.

did you have to do this manually. I had all trash that i wanted to delete (over 20,000) went to important.  And I don't know what to do, Emails not coming through as they say they are all important. But this is not syncing up with gmail account on computer or iPad. IPHONE10

ccould this be a glitch with the phone. Ready to give up gmail.

I'll add my voice.

It's surprising and disappointing how poorly Gmail works with Outlook.

this is still a problem.  I have used gmail in browsers forever.  It says that I have 14,000 emails.  That can only be because the deleted ones are still with me.  I cant find the folder archive but you say it is in gmail bucket.  I want my deleted emails to be deleted.  How can I fix?

This is the same thing with me.  Its ridiculous.  Gmail is not as user friendly as yahoo mail.  I get more crap mail in yahoo but every feature is super easy.  All my deleted mail in gmail goes to my "important" folder.  Its irritating and when you hit "reply" to a message, its just a yucky look when your replying, like the older message is below in a pop up box and not a good UI....

Has anyone figured out how to just delete a message and have it go where its supposed to??  TRASH??

I am having the same problem. I have yahoo mail. I added gmail to my yahoo mail so that I could get all of my emails together to that I wouldn't have to go to two different places to get my emails. Every time I delete a message in gmail it goes to the trash. I empty the trash. I go back to my gmail each day I have a message. I will delete the message and then delete all deleted messages. After about three or four weeks I have three years of messages that I deleted in my all mail. I just deleted 1400 emails that were in my all mail. It also does it on my phone. So I have to go to my phone and computer to delete all of my all mail. It drives me nuts. Has anyone got a real answer yet?
