Can't access e-mail via windows live Mail

I am unable to access my e-mail using Windows Live Mail 2012.   I keep getting the following error message:  "The server has rejected your login.  Please verify that your user name and password are correct."  I am able to log-in to Gmail using my browser so I know the correct user name and password.  I have verified that all the settings for Gmail are correct for use with Windows Live Mail 2012.  I've tried every "fix" suggested in the Help section but I continue to receive the same message..

Have you allowed for less secure apps?  Please do so, and see if that helps.  https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps

You may also need to clear a "captcha".  (You usually have only a 10 minute window after clearing the captcha, depending on what you are doing).

If using 2 Step Verification in Gmail, you may need an application  password. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/185833?hl=en

Use "recent" mode if you are using POP3 on multiple devices.  https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7104828?hl=en

Go to your Google "Account" page by clicking on your avatar on top right of screen after already logging in
Scroll down

Gotta locate and allow "less secure apps" in google settings. . Win live mail 2012 is considered "less secure". May have to also turn off 2 step verification as well. I had it off when setting up GMAIL but turned it back on. If doesn't work will turn it off again or just remove GMAIL account from Win Live Mail 2012 and use the default mail client that comes with win 10 as it works there. May need to generate a password too as explained above and use instead of your normal password. Also having problem with YAHOO mail. probably the same scenario.

Having trouble with this as well.  IMAP is enabled in gmail settings less secure apps option, but it still won't let windows live mail access my gmail.  I tried removing account from live mail and now it won't download because it still can't access the account.  I got a gmail about a less secure app being blocked, I verified via that message that it is me trying to access my gmail, but I am still being blocked. I don't know where the option to have google generate a password is so haven't been able to try that.

The link Graeme Murray posted seems to have done the trick, so thank you so much.  A very helpful thread.  No idea how to find that option again though without the link.  It's in google account and not in the gmail options?  I assume that is what google security alert turned off as the imap option in gmail was still turned on when I looked.  I probably not used live mail for few weeks which is why it triggered a security alert.

It worked a few weeks ago and all my google emails downloaded but trying again today and it's not allowing me to, it says the server has rejected my log in.  I changed my password and still not working. this is so aggravating as I want to look at one place for my emails.
