My Gmail account in Mac mail errors multiple times a day 'Login Failed', clicking it initiates re-login and it works for a bit.  All my software is up to date, I have two step authentication turned on, Gmail is iMap, the account has been deleted and added numerous times.  I have read through the forums and tried everything suggested and it still errors multiple times a day.

Have you allowed for less secure apps?  Please do so, and see if that helps.  https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps 
 
You may also need to clear a "captcha".  (You usually have only a 10 minute window after clearing the captcha, depending on what you are doing).

My Gmail in Mac Mail says it's offline, but it's not! I can't receive, send, or use calendar! Apple says it's Google. Google says it's an Apple bug. I wish someone had the answer.

I am having the same problem.  When I login to apple Mail which attached to my Google Gmail account for feeds to and from Google, I get the message "login failed".  When I go into Internet Accounts to attach my apple mail to google gmail, get the error "Authentication Failed".  When go through manually in Safari, I can login without a problem to my Email account.This just started happening on 4-19-2019.  I believe Google made some kind of change.   I started getting emails recently saying that I wasn't using Google Mail through their app and asking for me to start doing it.

Everyone's errors seemed to start around the same time. One commenter mention getting emails from Google suggesting that he use Google's Mail app -- I have seen similar notes. I'm willing to bet that this is a Google issue. They want us to use their app, not Apple Mail, and they have tweaked their system in some that "encourages" us to move to their app. Am I paranoid? Only if I'm wrong about Google.  :)

The update to Mojave worked for me a while back that has you go through the authentication via safari. Recently have had issues with NORDvpn not allowing me to send mail via apple mail though so have to have that disabled to send.
