The All Mail Folder - Can I delete without losing my Folders and Emails within?

Hello Support Gang. I have a boring but subtle problem. I use folders and move emails from my inbox to particular folders (categories) within my gmail. What I was wondering is if I can delete all the contents of the All Mail Folder? If I have moved everything over to folders that I have created, would that matter? Any Suggestions? Ideas? Thanks for any attention to this post!

no - gmail doesnt have folders

gmail only has 1 copy of each email and it is only in one place no matter how many labels it has so if you delete it from one view you are deleting the one and only copy of that email   also note - if you have conversation view on  it affects how you delete emails - if you get a reply to a sent email  , OR you reply to a received email and you delete the email or the reply   - they will both be deleted unless you pull down the arrow on the right of the email you want to delete and select delete this message ( or turn conversation view off in gmails settings  )   To delete a specific message from a conversation thread, click the down arrow next to Reply and choose Delete this message. Reply drop-down arrow

Gmail help  reference on deleting mail >> https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7401?hl=en

before you delete i suggest you read this http://gmail-miscellany.blogspot.com/2012/10/how-gmail-stores-your-mail.html  because gmail only has 1 copy of each email and it is only in one place no matter how many labels it has so if you delete it from one view you are deleting the one and only copy of that email

also note - if you have conversation view on  it affects how you delete emails - if you get a reply to a sent email  , OR you reply to a received email and you delete the email or the reply   - they will both be deleted unless you pull down the arrow on the right of the email you want to delete and select delete this message ( or turn conversation view off in gmails settings >> click the gear  picture in gmail > settings >  in the general category turn conversation view off > save  http://support.google.com/mail/answer/5900?hl=en )

to select multiple mail   ( see image below - it may take a few seconds to load  )
  1. Open the label (or, your Inbox, or Sent Mail, etc) containing the messages you'd like to select.
  2. Click the Select: All link above your messages.
  3. Click the link that says Select all [number] conversations in [current view].
  4. Select the action you'd like to do
to search eg by date / sender etc if you need to delete or move or action certain mail only  see Using advanced search

Because i don't want to risk accidentally deleting ALL my messages - some i'd like to save, for instance from my deceased father and some about financial or personal business; some are in folders, some just in the inbox, buried in the pages.
if i delete "all mail", as it seems to include everything, from inbox and sent box and etc - does that give me a completely empty account?
the "all mail" category seems to take up a lot of space and is duplicative. What is the purpose?

all mail is literally just all your mail

there are no duplicates in gmail

thank you; that article with the graphic was helpful. guess i can just "hide" the all mail folder and forget about, and still delete old messages individually, being aware of the conversation view, of course.

PPE,
What’s stopping me from deleting them?

That’s a great question.
The main things would be that I’ve used the folders to organize and file several categories of documents that I need to keep, such as for my insurance, business, car, etc. As well as recipes. Overall lots of docs that would be inconvenient if not a bad idea to loose...
Is there something like an alternative idea or place I could easily store them while I delete all mail, then bring them back?

i dont follow

why delete and bring back ?

why delete if you dont have low storage ?

The delete and bring back comment was just an idea, I wouldn’t know how to go about it. Just trying to find any alternative way to keep what’s in the folders.

I have 10,000 emails and it’s time to delete.

Or would love suggestions on how to organize differently in the future!

How do I access current 'sent mail'? I only get some mail from 2013 when I click on Sent.

Google, I found the reason many of my emails are going to All Mail (where they indicate Inbox as the location, btw). If I’ve ever “Starred” an email from the same sender, subsequent emails for that sender will ONLY appear in all mail with Inbox still indicated as location. However, it’s not in Primary nor All Inboxes, only in All Mail. If I click the Star, it then appears in 4 places: All Mail, Starred, Primary and All Inboxes. If I “Unstar” it, it immediately disappears from the other 3 and again sits only in All Mail. Fix it!!
