Gmail shows BCC recipients 7 Recommended Answers 0 Relevant Answers 146 Replies 238 Upvotes

If you send an email and list recipients in the BCC fields then only the sender should be able to see the BCC recipients.

If the BCC recipients are a mixture of gmail accounts and non-gmail then the non-gmail accounts do not see the BCC lits (which is correct). However any recipient that is a gmail account can see the full BCC list. THIS IS WRONG!

This has caused a GDPR breach for our organisation as we have now shared private email addresses with people who are not entitled to see them.

I can't find anywhere on Google's site to report this.

Hi,

Only sender would be able to see BCC list irrespective of gmail or non-gmail address.
If the email is disclosed, it should be send in some other method such as CC

Only the sender SHOULD be able to see the Bcc LIST - but that is not the case.

We have tried this from several Gmail accounts with a mixture of gmail and non-gmail accounts in the Bcc list. In all cases, the non-Gmail recipients canoot see the other Bcc recipients, but the gmail recipients can.

I use Gmail to send emails for Neighbourhood Watch and thought that if I sent the email to myself and add the other members in bcc, only I would be able to see to whom the email had been sent.  This is not happening in that some members are saying their contact email address is shown.

How do I correct this as I must under GDPR.   the list of email addresses to whom the email is sent. Thank you

As you can see from this attachment (I've redacted the full email adresses), Ian sent the email to a number of recipients, including myself (Steve). I can clearly see the bcc list.

Hi Lora, please obtain the raw message text of a message that the user sent that shows BCC addresses from the account where the message was received.  You can get this using Gmail's Show original feature:
  • Open the message, then click on the three vertical dots just right of the upper Reply button then on Show Original
  • Use the Copy to clipboard button, then paste into your reply
  • Feel free to mask email addresses for privacy by altering the usernames to something representative e.g. sender@, recipient1@, recipient2@, bcc1@, etc but do not alter any domain names.
