When run a system that checks if users click on a simulated phishing test. The problem we are seeing is that sometimes gmail will go through an email and follow a url (not just an image link either) to cache it even if the user does not click on the link. Specifically, the user will open the email, we will see one or 2 google IPs (One of which was registered under YouTube?) also open and follow a url link. Is this supposed to happen? Why and by what mechanism?

Thank you!

This seems to be happening across the company at the moment and we are yet to find the cause or solution. This is causing major headaches and causing the business to miss important updates from various companies and government agencies.

To explain the issue in more detail......

Our company is with G Suite for business and our company mailing lists are being automatically unsubscribed from external mailing lists such as Police, Political and Environmental Press Release mailing lists (to name a few).

The issue started about a month ago when we started receiving streams of emails confirming that we had successfully unsubscribed from these various external email lists.

After some investigation(and some firmly worded warnings to staff to cease clicking the unsubscribe links), we determined that no user in the company is actually accessing any of the unsubscribe links in the emails. The lists appear to be getting unsubscribed from without user intervention.

This is affecting singular staff email addresses and the company mailing lists.

One of the companies kindly sent us the recorded IP address of the server that had apparently unsubscribed.

122.149.3.4

I did nslookup on the IP and it showed the server name to be cache.google.com

I have a strong feeling that this is being caused by some sort of Google spam/security feature that is scanning/checking the unsubscribe links in every email and this action is then registering as an unsubscribe.

Does anyone have any idea of what could be causing this or have any solutions?

We got the same issue. Our website generates one-time authentication links. And some users experience a problem that their links are already expired even when they click it first time.
I enabled logging of all visitors and noticed that sometimes link are opened from IPs 66.102.8.17 and 66.102.8.31 which belong to Google.

We have the same problem. Already using Opportunistic TLS and its still causing us problems. We are looking into blocking certain IP's (from google) to try and mitigate the issue.
