Can't get rid of split pane in gmail on amazon fire tablet

The only settings that come up in Gmail on the fire tablet are mobile signature and vacation responder. I need to get to the reading pane view to check no split, so I can read my emails.

Hi Mary, if the Preview Pane is active, there should be an icon on the Gmail page to switch between Off, Horizontal and Vertical with no need to go to the settings pages.

There isn't the icon you mention. I am using the Silk browser on an Amazon Fire tablet.

Note that I haven't yet updated that article to show the new standard version introduced this year.
