How do I log directly into gmail? 0 Recommended Answers 15 Replies 65 Upvotes

Rant warning: I apologize if I come off poorly - I'm really frustrated by this today. Thanks for your patience and help.

<rant>
Navigating to mail.google.com used to take me directly to the gmail login page. I could enter my email address and password and be taken directly to my inbox.

No longer.

I'm not sure why changing the landing page for mail.google.com from a login to the "Get more done with Gmail" page is a good idea, but when you're working it's really inconvenient to be presented with nonsense like this:

I now have to click on "Sign in" - why? Because you want to advertise a service to me THAT I ALREADY USE?

Does that make sense to anyone in the room?

Anyone at all?

Here's the kicker: having clicked through the above page and logging in via the new javascripty BullSh*tty User/Pass screen, I am presented with this:

Does that look like an email inbox to you? Is there even an option to navigate to my email inbox?

Remember that all of this started with me navigating to mail.google.com, which I have done for almost 15 years.

</rant>

This is so frustrating. Can anyone please explain how I can just navigate directly to gmail without having to jump through landing pages?

Thanks in advance

Hi SC, I tried that process and the got same annoying sequence (except for the redirect to the accounts page).  Your rant is totally acceptable (and completely profanity-free!).  I then tried the same using Firefox - that doesn't happen, it goes directly to the Gmail sign in.

This appears to be [hopefully] a bug in Chrome, but it is a little more complicated in my testing.  My test in Chrome used a profile that I had created for testing something else, one that had never signed into a Google account.  After I used it the once and got sent to the Create Account page, I signed out and closed the browser.  Next time, I started the browser and entered mail.google.com, I was taken to the Account chooser page in the old way.

On a whim, I set that Chrome profile to clear cookies on exit and lo, back to the pattern you describe.  It appears that this new pattern is Chrome's response to having no Gmail cookies.  Does that match your situation?

I get the same nonsense and cannot figure out how to just log in the old way either. I do not have Chrome, so that can't be the issue. I would love to know how to remove "Get More Done with Gmail- Create an account".

Hi Marissa, what browser do you use?  What operating system?

Above paragraph wouldn't post because "Content violates Community Policy.".  This paragraph is just to add a lot more text to try and bypass these stupid algorithms that need to be retrained.

WHY is there STILL no answer or resolution we can use for this question/issue, especially since it was posted 2 months ago? I also find this new Google "landing page" situation extremely annoying, enough so that I am now considering ditching gmail and Chrome. Thanks to S Catheroy for introducing this topic, especially so that it came up immediately when I typed my issue into the search bar! Google, are you listening, or will you just continue to take our (waning) loyalty for granted?

That should be obvious from the posts above - no one has come back with responses to my diagnostic questions.  Do you have your browser set to clear cookies on exit?

Beg pardon, but I don't see the "obvious" answer to my primary question. When I searched and then posted, my hope was that someone who already knew how to resolve this would respond...like maybe even Google. Are you a google rep? Marisa's reply about not using Chrome but having the same problem should have helped some with your diagnostics. I do clear most categories daily, including cookies, but manually, as I haven't seen any setting to do that automatically when I exit. I found at least a temporary solution on another thread, which I can no longer find, but involved setting https://mail.google.com as your bookmarked log in. That is working to bypass the landing page...for now.

On a whim, I set that Chrome profile to clear cookies on exit and lo, back to the pattern you describe.  It appears that this new pattern is Chrome's response to having no Gmail cookies.

Historically, that "splash page" is displayed the first time you access Gmail in a browser, which is remembered in a cookie.  If cookies are manually or automatically cleared, you MAY see the splash screen again.

I say "MAY" because I can't get it to happen in a Chrome Incognito window which, by definition, has no saved cookies.

This all assumes one is accessing Gmail by going to https://mail.google.com/   The picture that shows account settings suggests that possibly a different URL was being used.

Why I cannot log in directly in my google account and I have to see this annoying page " Get more done with Gmail"?

Please read through the topic.  It's all explained above.
Then alter your browser to stop deleting cookies on exit.

User 10671273178933387147, please let me know how you are trying to connect to Gmail?  Are you signing into your account using a web browser at mail.google.com?  What exact message do you get when you try to sign in?
