One can't use the contact groups outside of the Gmail standard view web interface. It is not available through the Gmail iOS App or the iOS Mail app, neither through the Gmail mobile browser nor if you switch over to the Older version and the Desktop version (which is the Basic HTML version). Additionally, it is the same for Android as well. However, the Google Contacts Android app allows you to see and use the Contacts group label names.
My suggestion would be to submit feedback regarding this issue to the team using the Send Feedback option under Gmail settings in either the Web UI or the Gmail mobile app. The team is known to read all feedback submitted to them, although they may not respond back unless they desire additional information related to the topic of your feedback. The purpose of sending Feedback is to give the team a measure of the volume of users been affected by an issue or requesting a particular feature. The larger the volume of users asking for a feature or reporting a bug, the higher priority it assumes.

My case is a little different. I used an integration with my Google Contacts that automatically add new contacts from my CRM.
But these contacts don't show in my iPhone contacts.

The web version of gmail is opened in a new tab with the inbox view displayed.
-- That's because in the desktop browser view, clicking on the Email icon after selecting the contacts launches a pop-up window.
Why not just access the Gmail standard web UI from your mobile browser from your iPhone/iPad and then access the contact groups as you would from a desktop browser through Gmail? Can you please explore that possibility and post an update?

However, I need to share a file with a group. I know I can go to the gmail site first, but what I want is the ability to use the app that created the file (or just go to the file first), hit "share" and then have it bring me to a blank email to compose where I can then just type the group name in. Your suggestion is a kind of workaround but doesn't quite do what I'd like.

What you would require is the app to have the "share via Gmail" option. But more importantly, as the Gmail iOS/Android apps don't have the ability to use contact labels (groups), your purpose will be defeated. So, you now have the following options:
- If you use an Android device, try using the Google Contacts Android app from the Play Store. Once installed, try the following steps:
- Tap on the 3-bar menu icon at the top left to see the list of Contact labels/groups.
- Tap on the Contact label/group you wish to email.
- Tap on the 3-dot overflow/more menu at the top right.
- Tap on the Send email option.
- Scroll to ensure all emails are checked. In case a contact has multiple emails listed, only one is checked, if you want to send it to other emails listed for them, tap to check the box for that email address.
- Tap on the "check" icon at the top-right.
- You should now see the Gmail Compose window with all the Contacts included under the To: section. Attach the file and tap on the Send icon.
- Use the Gmail web UI, something which is already mentioned. :)
- Send the feedback to Google using the option from the Gmail Android/iOS mobile app.
