Google suddenly using a strange, almost-unreadable font. Customize fonts settings don't work.

After a Windows 10 reinstall, Google is no longer using the same font.  I have no idea why, because  Firefox was not similarly impacted.  It's just Google.   The font that Gmail and Google news are using now is odd-looking, pixelated, and very on the eyes.  I tried to fix this by going to Google settings and using the customize fonts feature.  That had no effect whatsoever.  The font remains unchanged, and is so hard on the eyes that it is making both products pretty much unusable for me.  How can I get back the nice, readable font I had before the Windows 10 reinstall?

You have indicated that FF is not impacted. So what's the other browser you use?
Can you please try the following basic troubleshooting steps and post an update?
  • Check, and if required, update your browser to the latest version.
  • Clear your browser cache and cookies and then test after signing-in.
  • Disable ALL browser extensions, scripts, and add-ons and start the browser again.
  • Test in Chrome incognito or Guest mode.
  • Temporarily disable your virus checker as Internet security, firewall and anti-virus applications can prevent Gmail from working correctly - particularly any of its add-ons/extensions that interfere with your access to the web or attempt to check your email. Be sure to turn it back on immediately afterward.
  • Test in another device.
  • Using a second Gmail account.
If the issue is resolved using a different device or a browser, you can also

Hi,

Thanks. The font is fine now.  Clearing the cache and/or signing out and signing back in again seems to have done it.  Maybe something had to be reset in Chrome after the new version of Windows 10 was installed.

I am one of the unfortunate people who recently got the Microsoft message that their Windows 10 update 1903 could not be installed until a new version of an Intel driver was installed.  The manufacturer of my machine provided an install download for the required driver, but the install didn't work.  They then transferred me to Microsoft, and the Microsoft agent was also unable to install the driver.  After trying various things, he was left with just one option - do a total Windows 10 reinstall.  After the install, Google suddenly had the weird font.

Anyway, thanks again :)

Linda
No worries! It was my pleasure. :)
