Hi Dane - try removing then adding back your account

In your Android Settings, go to Accounts and choose Google.  Select the account you wish to remove,  Now tap on the 3 dots in the upper right corner and select Remove account.

now, add it back

go to Settings, to Add Account and choose Google.  Now you should be able to follow the instructions to add an existing account.

this seems to work for many users with this issue.  Keep us posted!

"Remove Account" is not available if it is the only (primary) account.

As well, you cannot add a the same account twice

I have both Google inbox and Gmail on my device.  Inbox is working just fine, it's only gmail that cannot sync.  I've cleared the cache, cleared data.  It won't let me uninstall gmail, a google system app, and the account is the google account for the entire phone, so it won't let me remove that either.

Same here; in Android Settings/Accounts/Google/(my account name), I see the list of every single Google service, all switched on to sync automatically, and all of them are showing current sync times (and these can be made to all refresh at once manually as well)... except one service: Gmail.  Last sync time for Gmail is over 24 hours ago: 2015/05/07 17:02.  Google, please address this ASAP, as however useful all the other functions are, Gmail is actually the core reason for an Android phone.

Exactly the same issue. Something on my GMail (Macbook) got updated last night, Google Voice or Hangouts or some such crap and ever since then, GMail will NOT sync on my Android phone. All other Google Syncs are working fine, GMail does not. I have uninstalled ALL Google updates for ALL Google apps on my phone and allowed them all to re-update. I spent the better part of 4 hours troubleshooting this today and I am furious, ready to toss this crap and switch entirely to Apple. Google and their constant bloat with apps and services nobody asked for - sick of it all. Less is more people.

Exact same problem here: Gmail can't sync, everything else can, free space is fine, connectivity is good. Interestingly, before I cleared the Gmail data as suggested by the help tool, I was able to get to look at the emails that were showing at the top of the inbox (before 11 PM last night - perhaps they were cached?) but unable to get new headers. Installed Google Inbox as a stopgap (that's one way to get me on board!), works as intended. So I guess there's a sort of workaround...

OK, Thank You! To whomever figured out to change the GMail password on the computer. I did this, deleted my account on my phone, restarted the phone and it synced properly. Looked like it wasn't working at first, but it was syncing 30 days of mail so it took a while.
