Mail sent from outside the Mail app gets stuck in the Outbox folder.

Always include:
Device: iPhone 4
Carrier: AT&T
Country / Language: US/English
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): iOS 4

On my Google Sync account on my iPhone 4, if I send mail from Outside the Mail app (say, sending a photo from inside the Photos ap), it gets stuck in the Outbox folder. If I compose and send mail from Inside the Mail app, it sends immediately. For items that are stuck in the Outbox, I have to go into the Outbox, select the item, and it will let me edit it as if it was a draft. I can then hit send and it goes through immediately. This doesn't happen on my IMAP accounts or work Exchange account, just in my google sync account.

I'm having the same problem. Also came across this thread on the Apple board so far with no solution: http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2469497&start=30&tstart=0

I'm having the same issue along with plenty of other people as discussed in this thread:

I'm also having this issue, and its really getting annoying because I like to share a lot of weblinks with my friends. Now, granted, I can still accomplish this, but I hate always having to go into the mail app to resend each message from the outbox. Hopefully this gets corrected soon.

I am having the same issue with my new iPhone 4.  Emails generated from outside the standard mail app (share options in apps) go sit in the Outbox until I go manually click each one and click send again.

If I do send one like that and forget about it, all subsequent emails will be "stuck" until that one is sent.  This is so annoying.

On my previous 3GS with 3.1.3 one exchange account was max.  I got the 4 and iOS 4 now supports multiple exchange accounts.  I setup Gmail as exchange for the Push support, but now deal with this sending/outbox issue.

I have been thinking this is likely an issue with iOS 4 and its multiple exchange account support.  I can't wait for a solution!

New Update:

Device: iPhone 4
Carrier: AT&T
Country / Language: US/English
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): iOS 4

I just tried changing my default email account to a regular "gmail" account.  (Not setup as exchange).  When that account is default, the emails generated outside of the mail app (share features) are sent immediately and they don't get stuck in the Outbox.  As soon as I go back to the desired exchange account, problem comes back.

I added NuevaSync as my first exchange account on the phone.  (That syncronizes my multiple calendars and contacts - GoogleSync only does your personal calendar.)  I then setup GoogleSync as my second exchange account so I get push email.

Perhaps I need to try without NuevaSync and see if the problems persist.  Do you other folks have a similar setup as me?

Some people in the apple discussion at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2469497&start=0&tstart=0 are mentioning this happens when you have multiple exchange accounts configured.

I am experiencing the exact same problem.

I just got off the phone with Apple support.  I can send via other email accounts, including my work Exchange account, a Yahoo account, and my own IMAP account.

They conclude it is a GMail-specific problem.  Could somebody from Google address this?

Thanks!

Latest Update and My Resolution / Workaround:

So I upgraded to iOS 4 and started to utilize two Exchange accounts (NuevaSync and GoogleSync).  The problem started and I didn't know if it was the iPhone 4, iOS 4, or GoogleSync.  It appears to be iOS 4 and multiple exchange account support.

I recently realized GoogleSync can do everything NuevaSync can do (adding multiple calendars to GoogleSync isn't "simple" enough and I guess that is why I didn't know it had the support.

I eliminated the use of NuevaSync and was able to consolidate down to one Exchange service.  Once I did that, the problem went away.  I tested adding NuevaSync back and such...it always occurs when two Exchange accounts are present.  All of my testing revolved around those two specific Exchange services, so I don't know if it isn't specific to including GoogleSync as a variable.  Apple probably shouldn't conclude it is a GMail specific problem if I can continue to use their service perfectly if it is my only Exchange account.  (I also have a regular gmail account and yahoo account added - three mailboxes total.)

I hope this helps everyone!  I am very happy my phone works perfectly now.

I have a business exchange account and a gmail account. When I removed my old gmail imap account mail started working properly. It's still a bug but with an easy workaround. The solution is to only use imap OR exchange with gmail, but not both. I guess we all made the transition in stages and have two accounts hanging around.

The problem is that with an exchange account I can't sync Notes :(

An inactive IMAP account setup for gmail on the iphone will cause this issue! Even if it is not setup to do anything and mail is 'disabled', its existence seems to cause this issue.  I was having this exact problem on my iPhone 3g with IOS4, and after deleting the IMAP account I am not.  I have a 'normal' gmail account setup to just do email, then an Exchange account setup for the same google account just to sync google calendars (for the multiple google calendar support), and they co-exist just fine now that the inactive IMAP account is gone.

What worked for me was to delete the note sync in the phone. I had notes sync turned on after seeing it on tekzilla so that any notes entered would show up in gmail folder. When I got rid if sync the out box came back to life. No notes sync but it's better that a full out box

I had this issue and followed these instructions (from the apple board) and now it's working for me.

1 - removed gmail acct
2 - power cycled my iphone
3 - readded the gmail acct
4 - sent test msg

I held down both power and home buttons for a long time to power cycle the phone.
I removed ALL my mail accounts

I too had this problem and removing all my accounts, 3 gmail IMAP accounts that were Inactive, OTHER than my Exchange account, and this too fixed the problem.

Thanks to all who posted the fix!
