I keep getting "IMAP server issued an unrecognized greeting" after switching from POP3 to IMAP. What's wrong?

Explain your issue in full detail here:

I used to access Gmail using POP3 but since they recommend using IMAP I switched. Since then I couldn't access my account anymore. I get the error "IMAP server issued an unrecognized greeting" twice whenever I login to Outlook. I've triple checked all my settings and made sure that all the instructions from Gmail have been followed. What's wrong? Should I just shift back to POP3?

Make sure you are using port 993 for IMAP.

Thanks bkennelly, that worked. I can now access the incoming server. But I still can't access the outgoing server. Why are the settings given in the Gmail instruction page all wrong?!!!

For outgoing, make sure you are using smtp.gmail.com or smtp.googlemail.com.
Use port 465 with SSL or port 587 with TLS (STARTTLS).
