Gmail will not sync on my Android phone

Explain your issue in full detail here:
I am using an HTC magic phone with Android. Until three days ago my Gmail was working just brilliantly - since then nothing. Gmail, Calendar, Contacts - nothing will sync. Net access unaffected and other phone functions fine. Apps Status Dashboard says everything is fine. Changed my password via my computer just in case and that's not the issue. Anybody else getting this problem? I am only accessing from one computer or my phone, not multiple devices.

Hello... I have a brand new (5 days) Android phone. Although it recognizes my gmail account and I can use the gmail icon to go to the account, I only see my mail when I select the ALL MAIL folder. "inbox" always looks "empty" and like you the phone will never sync with gmail even though sync is ON. My question back to you is when you connect to gmail using your phone and select INBOX do you see your messages or must you also select the equivalent of ALL MAIL? I'm wondering if it is the invisibility of messages in my INBOX that is the root of the problem and not the phone's sync...

Hi - I have had my phone for about a month and just use the Gmail icon which goes straight to the inbox. I can't find any option to browse other folders. In the sync options it is set to sync the last 4 days of Inbox and Sent items and that just seems to have stopped working...? Restarted phone, checked sync is on in phone options. No joy.

I think I fixed it - not sure what options people see on different Android phones but on mine:
-From the home screen, went to: Settings > Applications >Manage Applications
-Selected "Google Mail" and then "Clear Data". Did the same for the App "Google mail Storage".
-Then went to Settings > "Data Synchronization" and unticked and ticked "Google Mail" to trigger a sync (Auto-Sync should also be ticked).
-Opened the GMail app and it sync'd and reloaded the last 4 day's emails.

Calendar and Contacts also appear to be sync'ing again and had to reactivate latitude which had also stopped working.
All seems OK now....

Thank you hedley.carr I been spending hours trying to figure out why my new address I set up for my gmail on my samsung moment wouldn't sync.  It would just keep saying your email will show shortly and 30 mins later it still did not show.  But clearing my google mail and storage did the trick...I love these forums!!! So helpful...

Hello,
I have an unlocked Huawei u8220 (with android 1.5 vanilla) and I have the same problem.

I found this hack (clearing cache & data for gmail & gmail storage) in the gmail help (as stated by SN), and this "solution" worked for a few days.
But now, the sync icon is in an infinite loop and I have absolutely no error output from the phone.
I also tried all day yesterday and had the "experiencing issues, will be back shortly" message from time to time (especially when cancelling the sync, after a few -- dozen -- minutes).

Today, nothing : leaving the icon looping just empties the battery, and cancelling the sync just fails silently. No new phone-contact appear in gmail, no new gmail-contact appear in phone... :-/

Sorry for the late bump, but this issue is *clearly* not solved.
Thank you all for your time (can we get a final answer from a google employee?)

I am having the same problem on my G1. The last sync was last week. I did everything mentioned on the above posts. Now when I click on the gmail icon it says "Waiting for Sync Your email will appear shortly" I also have noticed I can not receive text messages.

dcascario,

About the unreceived SMSes, did you check the sender receive the "delivery receipt" or whatever it's called.. Then maybe you should talk with you carrier about that, they probably can see if you should have received it (and then investigate the handset/android).

About the contact syncing (gmail and calendar never showed any problem), the sad result from my own experience is : be patient. It just worked again, like that, by itself, a few days after I posted the above message (maybe 7 or 10 days). It's a shame we cannot have a response from what has become a faceless corporation. No error log, no contact, no nothing.

I want to emphasize the "be patient", as my +/- 500 contacts list takes some time to sync. I remember that when the service worked again, the contact sync took a reaaally long time : i was in gmail following it's progress, at around 1 contact every 10 or 20 seconds. Now (I synced them 20 hours ago), it took a few seconds (under a minute)..

Sorry I cannot help more, maybe posting more "bumps" and filling the forum with basic complaints like this will convince Google to look for a durable solution / reduce the downtime / communicate on this issue...

Good luck !

- ps : if the above is offtopic because it's your gmail icon that is not working (and not the contacts, as for me), did you try logging into gmail from the browser ? I haven't deciced yet which one I should use mainly, both work almost the same (meaning they both do their job)
- ps for potential google fanboys : please don't sing us the "it's free so dont expect 1st class service" song : I'm a longtime google/gmail user and i regularly click on the highly targeted ads that sometime slow down my connection. So, peace + results please !
