I am sending an email with an attachment from my outlook exchange account to my gmail account. The attachment comes through as a winmail.dat file. I can send the same message with the same attachment to any other gmail account and the attachment comes through correct. I can not find an answer anywhere on this problem.
You need to configure Outlook/Exchange to use standard internet attachments, not TNEF.
Gmail will try to extract the attachments from the winmail.dat file, but not the message formatting, so you should be able to get your files, at least if you use the web app.
I don't think this is the problem. I have several gmail accounts and only one account seems to have this issue. I sent the same attachment to all of them and only one account is changing the attachments to a dat file. I have tried everything noted on the internet to solve the problem and it has not worked. I am thinking there is some kind of configuration within this account that is screwed up. I went to my online location for this gmail account and all the attachments are good. It is only happening on my Mac, my iphone and my Ipad
Gmail will never create or convert to winmail.dat files. They are coming from Outlook/Exchange and being passed to your email programs as received.
The setting to use TNEF in Outlook can be set separately for each contact in the address book, so make sure you open the entry for your Gmail address and set it to use internet (MIME) attachments.
I tried everything to change the type message being sent. When going to the contact and making the changes I noticed the information I was seeing was not what was being described. Nothing worked. So I deleted the contact from my address book and re-entered it. That worked and all attachments are coming through just fine. Thank you for all the help.
