Gmail account locked for security issue - help!

My gmail account has been locked for security reasons - I have no idea if my account got hacked or exactly what happened.  I tried to log in yesterday morning and received an error saying my password was incorrect (it wasn't).  Tried again - same result.  My cell phone died yesterday morning as well, so using it for text code was not an option.  Just about every option available to me ran into a brick wall.
Tried the "forgot password" option, only to end up the endless maze of questions to recover my account and being stumped by the date I opened the account, and receiving a message saying Google couldn't determine that I owned the account, had placed it on a security hold and would contact me in 3-5 days at another email address I had provided.

I desperately need to regain access to that email account, as it is an account I use for business -  and trust me I will be setting up a completely different method of being able to verify my identity for that account in the future.  I've never had this happen before.

Can anyone help?  What happens if Google refuses to believe that I am who I say I am?

You need to wait for Google to contact you.  Nothing else can be done, at this stage.

Thanks, catzrule, for replying - but I've seen some of the experts on this forum help folks like me get their account back by contacting Google on their behalf.  Is that not possible?

We can't do anything until Google respond to you.  After that, there may be further steps which need to be undertaken.

Let me know the full text of the reply;  redact anything personal.

Thank you very much for getting back to me, catzrule.  I appreciate it.  I'll let you know when I hear from them.  I'm only 2 days into the "3-5 days" they say it will take for them to get back to me, and there's a weekend coming up, so I'm sure it will be several more days before I hear from them.  :-(

Possible, but the correct procedure must be followed.

Catzrule -

Thank you for your help through this process.

I regained control of my gmail account about an hour ago!  I was doing the dance of joy over here.

For those saying it's not possible to regain your account - it IS possible.  Follow the instructions and provide as much info as possible.

I will be posting separately the steps I went through to regain control of my account in hopes that it might help others.
