Can you remove categories labels completely?

The new addition of categories labels are nothing more than a major annoyance to me, seeing as I create all my own labels for organization, and having messages be default labeled into any of these new category labels is incredibly stupid. Either stop default labeling messages into these categories or allow users to remove them completely, seeing as the hide/show feature does nothing to them. I've never complained about anything with Gmail, but this is the the most annoying thing that's ever been added.

You can hide the category labels if you don't use them. Hover over the label name in the left nav, click the arrow just to the right of the name, and choose both Hide options.

I completely agree Carl. I was so grateful to see your post. This has just appeared for me today and I am so frustrated. It is a completely useless addition that adds nothing except massive frustration and wastes my time and energy.

I have selected 'hide' in the settings multiple times but that does absolutely nothing. It says it is 'hidden' but it keeps doing it nonetheless. Like you I've never complained but this is really really frustrating and nothing I do changes it. I have searched everywhere and cant find a solution. Gmail - please change this default or at the very least allow us to turn it off!

Hi Michelle,
Thanks for your suggestion. However, these new 'categories' labels do not appear in the left navigation panel so they cannot be hidden or removed in the way you described as you would with normal labels. Thanks for trying though. Would love to hear some other ideas?

These are completely ridiculous! I didn't ask for them and I can't get rid of them..hiding them does not remove them from the label drop down selection! Google get rid of them!!!!

Add me to that list of "people wanting categories to disappear and die". We have Labels, they work find because the USER HAS CONTROL ... something Google seems to have lost sight of. Starting to behave like Apple ... have it our way or not at all. How about copying Burger King instead and say "Have it your way"????

And will dup this thread...

Turns out I couldn't mark this thread as a dub because there are other threads pointing to this one.  So if people would try to move their ongoing comments to the new thread that would help keep everything in one (well two) places.
