Has your email app stopped working properly with Gmail?

Hi there,

If you’ve recently noticed the third-party apps you use to sign into Gmail aren’t working, please read on.

This is likely due to the deprecation of something called “OAuth 1.0” that occurred on May 5th. OAuth is an authentication standard used by developers to connect their apps to Gmail. In 2012 we announced that developers should migrate to the newer, more secure version of this standard, OAuth 2.0, and in 2014 reminded developers that Google would be applying this new sign-in standard to Google accounts going forward. Finally, on May 5th we deprecated the previous version. Many app developers have not yet migrated over to OAuth 2.0 however, which has resulted in some of these apps not working properly.

If you have encountered this, the best thing to do is reach out to the app developer and provide them with the migration guide to OAuth 2.0. Additionally, as a temporary workaround for your account, you can enable the setting to ‘Allow less secure apps’.

Thanks so much for your understanding and hope the above information is helpful!
