Gmail app is not syncing automatically on my phone

Gmail has stopped syncing automatically on my phone.  I have to open the app and swipe down to sync the latest changes.

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app updates, clearing all of the gmail app data, clearing the gmail app cache, removing the gmail account from accounts on the phone and then adding it back, and restarting several times

I checked the account settings in the gmail app and it is set to sync mail.

I've had same problem since Gmail update (5.1) on 4/3 or 4/4. I've also gone through all the steps in Gmail Help topic "Gmail won't sync (Android)". I haven't found many posts of others having problem. Kitkat 4.4.4, Droid Maxx.

Exactly the same issue after the latest update.

Tried all steps on google help with no results.

The only way to get notifications about new emails is by either disabling/enabling Sync from my phone menu or being at the gmail app when a new email arrives, so seems something is wrong with the background service.

This is a major issue as i rely a lot on Emails to get notified at work, so i am already looking for an alternative app that could solve my problem, if anyone has a suggestion i am all ears.

UPDATE : i just reverted Gmail app to my phone factory installed one, very old but now notifications work, that proves it is a Gmail app issue also.

This also has been happening to me all week. After clearing caches and data, uninstalling and reinstalling accounts - and also reverting to the ugly original factory version - I now get notifications. BUT, with every new email notification, it tells me I have 900-plus emails (the content of my entire inbox) and the subject lines of the first dozen or so show up in my notification bar. ARRRRGH!!! Clearly, something is going on with Gmail and Android.
