Weird message at top of my main Gmail page.

From time to time the following message appears in a box at the top of my main Gmail page: "Hey, this is important: we don't have a password recovery email address or phone number for your account. If you lose your access, we may not be able to help you" Also in this message are the following two hyperlinks: "Add Info now | Dismiss"

Is this a legitimate message from Gmail or is someone is attempting to trick me into providing them with information they could use for nefarious purposes?

Yes, it is legitimate.  The link should take you to your Google account settings.

Thanks, bkennelly, for answering this. The message's beginning, "Hey, this is important", sounds a bit weird to me as a lead-in for an official communication (what, Google couldn't have sent me an email??).

But, I do appreciate your helping me out on this question.

Best regards.
