Change your Gmail availability & status

You can change your status to Automatic, Do not disturb, or Away.

Change your status on Gmail

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. From your status indicator at the top, click Down Down arrow .
  3. Choose: "Automatic," "Do not disturb," or "Set as away."
  • Optional: If you choose "Do not disturb," you can select how long to mute your notifications. 

Understand Gmail status

Status icon Status text Status meaning
Green Active You currently have Chat open.
Red Do not disturb Mute is turned on or user is presenting during a meeting.
White Away You aren't connected to the internet, haven't interacted on Chat for more than 15 minutes, or have selected "Set as away" as your status.
Orange Idle You're recently active in Gmail on web in the last 15 minutes.

Set a custom status

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. From your status indicator at the top, click the Down arrow Down arrow.
  3. Click Add a status.
  4. Follow the prompt to choose an emoji, write a status message, or end or clear a status.
  5. Click Done.

Delete a custom status

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. From your status indicator at the top, click the Down arrow Down arrow.
  3. Click the status to delete.
  4. Click X.
  5. Click Done.
