You can start or join face-to-face video calls while in Gmail.
Important: For call notifications to work as intended, please make sure you have the latest version of the app installed.
Start or join video calls from the Meet tab
- Open the Gmail app .
- On the bottom, tap Meet . Meetings scheduled on Google Calendar appear under “Meetings”. You can tap on an upcoming meeting to find the meeting details and join the call.
- To organize a new Meeting, tap New meeting. You’ll have 3 options:
- Get joining info to share: This creates a new meeting but doesn’t join it right away. A new meeting link will appear so you can share it with others. Once shared and ready to join the meeting, tap Join a meeting and use this code to enter it.
- Start an instant meeting: This creates a new meeting and joins it right away. Once in the call, you can share the meeting invite with others.
- Schedule in Google Calendar: This will direct you to the Google Calendar app to schedule a new meeting.
- To join a meeting with a meeting code, tap Join a meeting > enter the code > tap Join.
Show or hide Meet in Gmail
- From within the Gmail app, tap Menu .
- Tap Settings .
- Select the account for which you would like to configure this setting.
- Under "Meet", check or uncheck the box next to Show the Meet tab for video calling.
Start a video call from Chat or Gmail
- Open the Chat app or Gmail app .
- Tap Chat or Spaces .
- Open a chat message.
- In the reply area, tap Action menu Meet link Send .
- To join a video meeting, tap Join video meeting Join now.
Call someone directly from Chat or Gmail
Important: To make direct Meet calls from the Google Chat app, you must have the latest version of the Gmail app.
You can start a voice or video meeting from Chat or Gmail. When the other person receives the call, they’ll hear a ring.
- In Chat, in the bottom navigation menu, tap Direct messages .
- Open a direct message.
- At the top, click Start voice call or Start video call .
- To end the call, click End call .
Tip: If you call someone who uses the Chat app but doesn’t have the Gmail app:
- Their phone doesn’t ring.
- They receive a Chat notification that you started a voice or video call.
