Add a signature to Gmail messages

A signature is a bit of text, like your contact information or a favorite quote, that’s automatically added at the end of Gmail messages you send.

Computer

Signatures are separated from the rest of your message by two dashes. To see a signature in Gmail, click the Show trimmed content button at the bottom of the message.

Add a signature

  1. On a computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click the settings icon Settings.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Scroll down to the "Signature" section and enter your new signature text in the box.
  5. Optional: Format your text using the buttons above the text box.
  6. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
Go to Gmail settings Advanced signature options (computer only)

Add an image

  1. Go to the Settings page.
  2. Above the signature text box, click Insert image Insert image icon.

You can use an image that's public on the web or an image from Google Drive. If you're using an image from the web, make sure that you're free to use the image.

Add a signature to multiple email addresses

If you use the “Send mail as” feature to send from different addresses in your account, you can add a different signature for each address. To select an address, use the drop-down menu above the signature text box on the Settings page.

If you don’t see the drop-down menu:

  1. Under Settings, go to the Accounts tab.
  2. Check that your addresses are listed in the “Send mail as” section.

Extra characters were added

If you notice extra characters such as * or > in your signature after you send messages, it's because some versions of Gmail don't support features like bolding or italics. For example, text you bolded in your signature might be marked with asterisks, so example would show as *example*.

Signature is too long

Most of the time, you can only use 10,000 characters in your signature.

No formatting options

If you see “Plain Text” above the signature box and don’t have any formatting options while creating your signature, here’s how to fix the problem:

  2. Click More options More options drop-down arrow.
  3. Deselect "Plain text mode."
