Block someone's emails

If you're getting emails that you don't want in your Gmail inbox, you can block or unsubscribe from the sender, or report the message to Gmail.

Note: If someone uses Gmail to harass, intimidate or threaten you, they're violating Gmail's programme policies. If you feel that you're in danger, contact your local authorities straight away and ask whether any cyber harassment laws apply to your situation.

When you block a sender, messages that they send you go to Spam.

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. Open the message.
  3. At the top right, click More More.
  4. Click Block [sender].

Tip: If you blocked someone by mistake, you can unblock them using the same steps.

Unsubscribe from mass emails

If you've signed up on a site that sends lots of emails, such as promotions or newsletters, you can use the unsubscribe link to stop getting these emails. After you've unsubscribed, it may take a few days for the mailing list to stop sending you messages.

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. Open an email from the sender that you want to unsubscribe from.
  3. Next to the sender's name, click Unsubscribe.
  4. In the pop-up, click Unsubscribe.
    • Some senders may require you to click Go to website to unsubscribe from their emails.
  5. Optional: Once you've unsubscribed, in the banner, click Move to spam.

Tips:

  • You can also unsubscribe when viewing your list of emails. To unsubscribe, hover over an email and click Unsubscribe.
  • When you unsubscribe, instead of the sender's name, you may see a unique identifier for a mailing list or a list ID.

Remove spam or suspicious emails

Remove and block spam from my inbox

Gmail tries to keep spam out of your inbox, but sometimes messages get through. If you see a spam message in your inbox:

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. Tick the box to the left of the message or open the message.
  3. Near the top of the page, click Report spam .

Tip: When you click ‘Report spam’  or manually move an email into your Spam folder, Google will receive a copy of the email and can analyse it to help protect our users from spam and abuse.

A suspicious email asked for personal information

If you see a suspicious email that asks for personal information, you can report the email for phishing.

  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. Open the email that you want.
  3. At the top right, click More More.
  4. Click Report phishing.
