Block unwanted emails

If you’re getting emails you don’t want in your inbox, there are a few things you can do.

The email is spam

Gmail tries to keep spam out of your inbox, but sometimes messages get through. If you see a spam message in your inbox:

On the Gmail Android app
  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Open the message you'd like to report.
  3. On the very top right, touch the three-dot menu with the red backgroundmenu.
  4. Touch Report spam.
On a computer
  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Select the message you'd like to report.
  3. Click the spam button Report spam icon in the toolbar above your emails.
  4. If you have the message open, you can also report it as spam by using the same Report spam icon button.

Remember, every time you report spam or phishing, it helps us identify those emails as spam for you in the future.

The email is from a shopping, social network site, or similar

You might be subscribed to a site that sends you frequent updates, like emails about upcoming sales. To unsubscribe to these emails:

  1. Open one of the emails.
  2. Click the Unsubscribe or Change Preferences link at the bottom.

If you don’t see these links, you can set up a filter (see “I just don’t want this email in my inbox” section below) or mark it as spam.

I just don’t want this email in my inbox

While you can't currently block emails from specific addresses or domains, you can set up a filter to send those emails directly to Trash.

  1. On a computer, open Gmail.
  2. Check the box next to the email you’d like to create a filter for.
  3. Click More.
  4. Click Filter messages like these.
  5. Fill out information about the emails you want to filter. Click Create a filter with this search at the bottom-right.
  6. Check the box for what you’d like to do with messages that fall into that filter. If you’d like them to get sent to Trash, check the box for Delete it.

Suspicious email asking for personal information

If you see a suspicious email asking for personal information, you can report the email for phishing.

On the Android Gmail app
  1. Open Gmail
  2. Open the email you'd like to report.
  3. On the very top right, touch the three-dot menu with the red backgroundmenu.
  4. Touch Report phishing.
On a computer
  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Open the email you'd like to report.
  3. Click the down arrow next to the Reply button, at the top-right of the message.
  4. Select Report Phishing.

Remember, every time you report spam or phishing, it helps us identify those emails as spam for you in the future.
