Recover deleted messages

Sometimes you can get deleted Gmail messages back, but not always.

If you've moved a message to Trash by clicking Delete but it's been fewer than 30 days and you haven't permanently deleted it, you can get it back.

Move deleted mail out of Trash

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Along the left side of any Gmail page, click Trash.
Note: If you don't see Trash along the left side of your Gmail page, go to Settings Settings > Labels, then click show next to the Trash label.
  3. Find the message you'd like to recover, then check the box next to the sender's name.
  4. At the top, click the Move to icon Move to.
  5. Click Inbox.

You’ll now see the message in your Gmail inbox.

Permanently deleted mail

If you've deleted a message by choosing Delete Forever, you won’t be able to get the message back.

If your messages are permanently deleted because someone got into your account without your consent, you can ask us to see whether we can recover your messages. To do this, do both of the following steps:

  1. Complete this process to secure your account.
  2. File a report.
