Archive or mute Gmail messages

If you want to clean up your inbox without deleting your emails, you can archive or mute them. Your emails are moved to a label called "All Mail."

  • When you archive a message: The message will come back to your inbox when someone replies to it.
  • When you mute a message: Any replies stay out of your inbox. You can search for the conversation if you want to find it again.

Choose your archive or delete settings

  1. Open the Gmail app Gmail.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu .
  3. Tap Settings and then General settings and then Gmail default action.
  4. Choose whether you want to archive or delete your messages by default.
  5. Tap Archive or Delete. Deleted messages are permanently removed from the Trash after 30 days.
  6. Scroll down to the "Action confirmations" section and choose if you want confirmation before archiving or deleting messages.

Archive a message

If you selected Archive in the setting above, you can archive your messages two ways:

  • From your inbox, swipe the message to the right or left.
  • From inside a message, tap Archive Archive.

To archive multiple messages, select the messages, then tap Archive Archive.

Note: Even if you chose Delete in the default setting above, you can archive a message by opening it and tapping Archive Archive.

When you search in Gmail, your results will include any messages that have been archived.

Open the All mail label

The All mail label is added to any message. If a message has been archived, you can find it by opening the All mail label.

  1. Open the Gmail app Gmail.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Tap All mail.
Move archived messages back to your inbox
  1. Open the Gmail app Gmail.
  2. Open an email message.
  3. In the top right, tap More More.
  4. Tap Move to Inbox.

Mute or ignore messages

  1. Open the Gmail app Gmail.
  2. Open the conversation. If you want to stay in your inbox, tap the sender's profile image.
  3. In the top right, tap MoreMoreand then Mute.
