Use the old version of Contacts

You can save names, email addresses, phone numbers, and more in the old Google Contacts.

Switch to the new Google Contacts

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the bottom left, click Try Contacts preview.

Add, edit, or delete contacts

Note: If these steps don't work for you, you’re probably using the newer version of Contacts. Go to add, edit, or delete contacts in the new Contacts.

Add a contact
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. In the top left, click New Contact.
  3. Add contact information.
Edit a contact
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. Click the contact’s name.
  3. Hover your mouse over the contact info, then type in the box that shows up.
Delete a contact
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. Next to the contact’s name, check the box.
  3. At the top, click More and then Delete Contact.
Delete automatically saved "Other Contacts"
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. In the bottom left, click Other Contacts.
  3. Check all the contacts you want to delete.
  4. At the top, click More and then Delete contacts.

Group & sort contacts

Note: If these steps don't work for you, you’re probably using the newer version of Contacts. Go to group contacts in the new Contacts.

Create a contact group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left, click New group.
  3. Type a new group name.
  4. Click OK.
Add a contact to a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. Next to the contact’s name, check the box.
  3. At the top, click Group Group.
  4. Check the groups you want to add your contact to.
Remove a contact from a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left under My Contacts, click a group.
  3. Next to the contact name you want to remove, check the box.
  4. At the top, click Group Group.
  5. A checked box will be next to any group the contact is in. To remove a contact from a group, uncheck the group.
Rename a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left under My Contacts, click a group.
  3. At the top, click More and then Rename group.
  4. Type a new group name.
  5. Click OK.
Delete a group
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left under My Contacts, click a group.
  3. At the top, click More and then Delete group.
  4. Click OK.
Sort a group alphabetically
  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. On the left under My Contacts, click a group.
  3. At the top, click More.
  4. Check First Name or Last Name.

Merge contacts

Note: If these steps don't work for you, you’re probably using the newer version of Contacts. Go to merge contacts in new Contacts.

  1. Go to Google Contacts.
  2. At the top, click More.
  3. Click Find & merge duplicates...
  4. Click Merge.

Turn on keyboard shortcuts

  1. Go to the old version of Google Contacts.
  2. In the top right, click the Settings Settings.
  3. Next to "Keyboard shortcuts," select Keyboard shortcuts on.
  4. Click OK.

Keyboard shortcuts you can use

You can use keyboard shortcuts to select, navigate, and edit your contacts.

To see a complete list of keyboard shortcuts, including which need to be turned on, open Contacts and type ?.

Note: Keyboard shortcuts work differently on PC and Mac computers. On PCs, use Ctrl instead of .

In Gmail, you can use shortcuts to go to or select Google Contacts.
