Fix issues with adding an account in the Gmail app
The username and password aren't accepted
Check with your other email service for:
- The correct server, port, and security settings.
- Whether you need an app-specific password to sign in.
You receive the message: "Email security not guaranteed"
If your other email service doesn't support the highest level of security for your messages, we'll show you this warning.
If the issue isn't severe, you'll have the option to add your account using an unsecured connection:
- Tap the "Security type" dropdown menu.
- Select None.
Important: When you choose this option, your connection to your email service isn't encrypted. This means that someone might find the username, password, or message information of your added account.
There's a certificate error
If you receive an error message about a certificate, your other email service might not support a secure connection. Examples of certificate error messages include:
- "Certificate not trusted"
- "Certificate expired or not yet valid"
- "Certificate has been changed"
- "Certificate subject and hostname mismatch"
- "Certificate not found"
To help fix the error, you can report it to your other email service:
- In the error message, tap More info.
- In the top right, tap More Share.
- You may need to do a search for the contact information of your other email service.
Something went wrong, or Gmail couldn't open a connection to the server
You can't add non-IMAP accounts, like Exchange and POP, to your Gmail app. If you're adding a different type of account, check with your email provider to make sure IMAP is turned on.
