Gmail app messages aren't syncing

If Gmail isn’t syncing automatically, you might notice the following problems:
  • Can't send mail, or mail is stuck in send
  • Not receiving or not loading new mail
  • Can't open or read mail
  • Inbox not updating
  • “Account not synced” error
  • Not receiving notifications for new messages
  • App is very slow

If you’re having notifications issues, check your Gmail notifications settings.

First, try these common fixes

Usually, one of the checks below helps solve the problem.

Check that you’re connected to the Internet

Your internet connection might not be working. To check that you’re connected, try visiting a website in your mobile web browser. If you’re using public Wi-Fi, like at a cafe or library, you might need to load a website to accept the Terms & Conditions before you’re actually connected.

Also, make sure Airplane Mode is turned off.

Check sync settings on your Gmail app

Depending on your sync settings, the Gmail app might not be checking for new mail.

  1. Open the Gmail app .
  2. On the left, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. If you have more than one account, choose the account you’re not getting email for.
  5. Make sure Sync Gmail is checked.
Check sync settings on your mobile device

On many Android phones and tablets, you can turn off sync for all apps at once. You may have turned off sync on purpose or by accident.

Even if sync is already on, try turning it on and off a few times.

  2. On your mobile device, open Settings Settings.
  3. Under "Personal," touch Accounts.
  4. In the top-right corner, touch More More.
  5. Check or uncheck Auto-sync data.
  1. Close the Gmail app.
  2. On your mobile device, open Settings Settings.
  3. Under "Wireless & networks," touch Data usage.
  4. In the top-right corner, touch More More.
  5. Check or uncheck Auto-sync data.
On devices running Android 5.0 and up
  1. Close the Gmail app.
  2. On your mobile device, open Settings Settings.
  3. Under "Personal," touch Accounts.
  4. In the top-right corner, touch More More.
  5. Check or uncheck Auto-sync data.

  2. On your mobile device, open Settings Settings.
  3. Under "Wireless & networks," touch Data usage.

  5. Check or uncheck Auto-sync data.
Issues specific to non-Gmail addresses

If you use the Gmail app with a non-Gmail address, like @yahoo.com or @hotmail.com, check your email on a computer to check if the sync issues you were experiencing, like not seeing any new mail, are only occurring in the Gmail app.

If you’re not able to view new mail on the computer, check the support information for your email provider.
