When you select an email, you'll see buttons under the search box that let you take action on your messages. For example, you can use the buttons to delete a message or mark it as spam.
Note: You can also see buttons when you right-click or hover over a message.
What the button icons & symbols mean
: Archive the message

Change your buttons to text instead of icons
You can change your buttons so that they show the name of the button instead of an icon.
- Open Gmail

- In the top right, click Settings
See all settings.
- Scroll down to the "Button labels" section.
- Select Text.
- At the bottom of the page, click Save changes.
Remove hover actions
When you hover to the right of a message, you'll see some of the buttons from your Gmail toolbar. You can turn those hover actions off.
- Open Gmail

- Scroll down to the "Hover actions" section.
- Disable hover actions
- At the bottom of the page, click Save changes.
