Non-English message text displays incorrectly

Gmail encodes your mail messages based on your browser's language settings. If you're seeing invalid characters while composing or reading messages in languages other than English, try adjusting your browser's encoding settings to match your language.

Choose your browser to adjust its encoding settings:

Internet Explorer
  1. From the View menu at the top of your browser, select Encoding.
  2. Choose a language encoding from the list. (Click More to see additional languages.)
Firefox
  1. From the View menu at the top of your browser, select Character Encoding.
  2. Choose a language encoding from the list. (Click More Encodings to see additional languages.)
Safari
  1. From the View menu at the top of your browser, select Text Encoding.
  2. Choose a language encoding from the list.
Chrome

For instructions, see Adjust encoding settings in Chrome.

If you're still having trouble reading mail in languages other than English, your mail client might be converting encodings during the transmission of your messages. We're aware this issue and are working to find a solution. In the meantime, you can view messages properly by opening an original copy in Gmail:

  1. Sign in to Gmail.
  2. Open the conversation containing the message you want to view.
  3. Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message.
  4. Click Message text garbled?
Help us improve our encoding by reporting your issue.
