Inbox styles and settings
Try out a new inbox style to quickly organize your inbox in a way that fits you best. Your inbox can be organized into tabs like Social and Promotions, or into sections like Unread, Starred, and Important.
Change your inbox type
You can always switch back if you change your mind, so go ahead and experiment with different styles.
- Open Gmail.
- Click the gear in the top right and select Settings.
- Select the Inbox tab.
- In the “Inbox type” section, select an inbox style in the drop-down menu.
- Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
You can also quickly change your inbox style by hovering over Inbox on the left side of your Gmail and clicking the down arrow.

Each inbox type has its own settings. To see available settings for a particular inbox, go to the Inbox tab in Settings and select the inbox type from the drop-down menu (see directions above).
You can also access many settings right from your inbox with the down arrow that’s located above each inbox section.
