Change your Gmail language settings

You can change the language you use in Gmail, and use special keyboards to type in other languages.  

Change the language in Gmail

  1. Open Gmail.
  2. In the top right, click Settings .
  3. Click See all settings.
  4. In the "Language" section, pick a language from the drop-down menu.
  5. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

Type in another language

Important: You can use input tools to type in languages like Hindi, Arabic, or Chinese. You can only set up input tools in your browser and not the Gmail app. Learn about input tools.

  1. Open Gmail
  2. In the top right, click Settings .
  3. Click See all settings.
  4. In the "Language" section, next to “Enable input tools,” check the box.
  5. Click Edit tools.
  6. Select the language input tools you want to use.
  7. Click Ok.
  8. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
  9. Open your inbox.
  10. In the top right next to Settings , click the language icon.
    • To switch among multiple input tools, click the down arrow .

Tip: If there are letters from a wrong language when you use browsers like Safari or Firefox, update your browser’s text encoding settings. For Safari and Firefox, text encoding settings are available in the “View” menu.

Turn on right-to-left editing

  1. Open Gmail
  2. In the top right, click Settings .
  3. Click See all settings.
  4. In the "Language" section, click Right-to-left editing support on.
  5. At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.

Tip: When you start a new email, in the bottom left of the compose window, click Formatting options  and then Right-to-left.
