Standard view and basic HTML view

Gmail has two primary views or display modes, based on the type of browser you use to access it: standard view and basic HTML view.

Standard view

Standard view is what you'll see when you sign in to Gmail from a supported browser. Standard view gives you access to all Gmail features.

Basic HTML view

Basic HTML view is what you’ll see when you sign in to Gmail using a browser that is not supported. For a preview, see basic HTML view. This view is compatible with almost any browser but does not support the following features:

  • Chat
  • Spell checker
  • Keyboard shortcuts
  • Ability to manage filters
  • Adding, editing, importing, or deleting contacts
  • Custom 'From:' addresses
  • Rich formatting

If you need to access these features, please sign in to Gmail from a supported browser, and make sure you have cookies and JavaScript enabled.

Switching views

If you're directed to Gmail’s basic HTML view, but would like to try the standard view, visit http://mail.google.com/mail?nocheckbrowser. Keep in mind that standard view may not work, even with this link, if your browser isn't supported.
