With Gemini in Gmail, you get a collaborative inbox assistant that can help you do things like:

  • Summarize: Synthesize long email threads into concise bullet points.
  • Draft: Create new emails or refine existing drafts for tone and clarity.
  • Organize: Ask Gemini to do things like delete multiple emails or add labels.
  • Search: Find specific details, like flight times or package tracking.
  • Schedule: Propose meeting times based on your availability in Google Calendar.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. On the right, use the Gemini in Gmail interface to manage your emails:
    • Prompt box: At the bottom, type your request and then click Submit .
    • More options : At the top left, access your conversation history, Gems, and other settings.

Things to ask Gemini in Gmail

Ask questions from the web

Important: To get answers from the web, make sure to include phrases like “Use Google Search” or “Using web search” in your prompt.

  • “Write a paragraph describing the weather today in Mountain View, California using web search.”
  • “Help me write a paragraph explaining if lightning can strike the same place twice using only information from the web.”
Draft an email or chat message

You can use Gemini in Gmail to draft email or chat responses.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • “Draft an email to Kevin summarizing our progress on Project Clover.”
    • “Refine this chat message I am sending to Lori: ‘We are good to start Project Clover.’ Make sure it’s professional and concise.”
  4. Click Submit .
Find information from previous emails

Gemini can get information on reservations, flights, packages, and other emails sent to your inbox. For example:

  • “When is my package arriving?”
  • “What time is my next flight?”
Generate a Google Docs document

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create a Google Docs document.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt, for example:
    • “Create a meeting notes agenda.”
    • “Generate a draft with a response to this email.”
    • “Create a quick project coordination doc with a 30/60/90 plan section.”
  4. Click Submit .
Generate a Google Sheets spreadsheet

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create a Google Sheets spreadsheet.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt, for example:
    • “Create a sheet to track my monthly expenses with columns for date, category, amount, and notes.”
    • “Create a table for a project tracker in Google Sheets with columns for task, assignee, deadline, and status.”
    • “Create a 10-day itinerary for a first-time visitor covering Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.”
    • “Create a visual dashboard in Sheets of this sales data.”
  4. Click Submit .
Generate a Google Slides presentation

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create a slide in Google Slides with a single prompt.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • “Create a slide on quantum computing for a general audience with a modern design.”
    • Optional:
      • To give your presentation the same style as an existing slide deck, you can use @<presentation name> to reference it. For example: “Create a presentation based on @old_project”.
  4. Click Submit .
  5. Keep the tab open until Gemini generates your presentation.
    • This may take up to several minutes.
    • You can switch to other tabs or windows, but do not close the existing tab.

Generate images

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to generate images.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. At the bottom, type your prompt.
    • Example: “Create an image of a dog with glasses.”
  4. You can also:
    • Change your prompt: Click Edit prompt edit.
    • Send feedback about the generated images: At the bottom, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .

Get information about your events

Important: Gemini in Gmail can only give you information about events on your primary calendar.

  • “What’s my first meeting tomorrow?”

Tip: To specify Google Calendar in your request, at the beginning of your prompt, add "@Calendar."

Manage tasks & show suggested to-dos

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create and manage tasks and ask questions about your tasks, including suggested to-dos from chats and emails that need your attention.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • “What tasks do I need to do today?”
    • “Add a task to complete the project proposal today.”
    • “Change the date of that task to tomorrow instead.”
    • “Mark the Friday workout task as complete.”
    • “Delete that last task.”
  4. Click Submit .

You can use Gemini in Gmail to:

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.

  4. Click Submit .
  5. Review the confirmation card or the matching emails presented by Gemini to ensure they match your criteria.
  6. Click the confirmation button or reply with an affirmative text response to process the request.

Learn how Gemini manages your emails

  • Your emails are never deleted, archived, labeled, or marked read or unread until you explicitly confirm to Gemini that you want to process the action.
  • When an action is confirmed, you have 60 seconds to undo it. If you submit a new prompt to Gemini, or more than 60 seconds has passed, you won't be able to undo your request.
  • If you delete multiple emails and you can no longer undo it, you can manually recover your emails from Trash. After 30 days in your Trash, your emails are permanently deleted.
  • You can only add labels that exist in your account. You can’t create new Gmail labels with Gemini.
  • If there are more than 10,000 email threads that match your criteria, the request is not processed by Gemini.
  • You can’t ask Gemini to mark multiple emails as spam.

Tip: If you accidentally deleted multiple emails, learn how to move your emails from Trash back into your inbox.

Reference other files to edit or refine content

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to use specific files to write, edit, or refine content. For example: “Update the project timeline based on the latest updates from our meeting notes doc.”

  1. At the bottom, click Add sources and then Add from Drive.
    • Or, you can type “@” and then search and select from the menu.
  2. Select one or more files.
  3. Click Add.

Schedule, manage, or find events

Important: You can only create events on your primary calendar.

You can use Gemini in Gmail to schedule events, reschedule or delete existing events, find open time slots, or check calendars for availability.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • “Create a 30 minute meeting with Kevin this week.”
    • “Schedule 1 hour of focus time for me this week.”
    • “Reschedule meeting with Lori to next week.”
  4. Click Submit .

Tip: If Gemini in Gmail detects information about events in an email, an Add to calendar button appears above the email. When you click Add to calendar, Gemini in Gmail extracts the relevant information from the email and adds it to your calendar. Gemini in Gmail also asks for confirmation if there are multiple events found.

Search for certain types of emails

Gemini can search for your emails that are unread, from a specific date range and from specific people. Gemini will load the results in a Gmail search. For example:

  • “Show my unread emails.”
  • “Emails from [person] sent last week.”
  • “Show unread emails from this week.”
Summarize an email thread

You can ask for a summary from Gemini in Gmail. For example:

  • “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.”
  • “Explain this email to me like I’m 5 years old.”
Use a Gem

Important: Not all languages support Gems. Learn more about supported languages for Google Workspace with Gemini.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. At the top left, click More options .
  4. Click the Gem you want to use.
    • To find more, click View all.
  5. Select a custom or premade Gem.
    • To start a conversation with the Gem, type a question or prompt at the bottom.

Tip: To create a Gem, go to gemini.google.com. You can then use your Gem in the Gemini app and Gemini side panel. Learn how to use Gems in Gemini Apps.

Use a skill

Important: To use a skill in Gmail, create the skill and turn it on in Workspace Studio.

You can use skills in your conversation with Ask Gemini in Gmail to analyze emails or draft responses with custom instructions.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. On the right, in the Ask Gemini side panel, enter your prompt.
    1. To use a skill, in your prompt, enter: @.

    2. Select the desired skill from the auto-complete list.

  4. Click Submit .

Tip: To refine email response drafts and match specific brand tones or guidelines, add a "Client Communication" skill.

Give feedback on generated output

Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.

If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback.

  1. Below the generated output, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  2. If you click Bad suggestion , you can select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
  3. Click Submit.
