Draft emails with Gemini in Gmail

Important: This article refers to a feature available to users on work accounts through the Gemini Enterprise and Gemini Business add-ons, and to users on personal accounts through Google One AI Premium.

In Gmail, you can use artificial intelligence to draft messages based on your prompts. You can use the Help me write button in Gmail to:

  • Write a new draft using a free form prompt. For example, you can ask Gmail to write a birthday invitation, or write an introduction to a potential business contact.
  • Refine a draft. For example, you can make the draft more formal, more concise, or more detailed.

Use AI to write a new draft

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose.
    • You can also reply to an email thread.
  3. In the bottom right of the window, tap Help me write.
  4. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • "A thank you letter for my job interview"
    • "A birthday invitation for my 5-year-old"
    • "Ask my friend for restaurant recommendations in Toronto"

      Tips:
      • For better results, consider including the recipient, the topic, and the tone you want to convey in your prompt. For example: "An apology to my child's teacher for their absence."
      • It may take a few tries before you get a draft that you like. To enter a new prompt, tap the prompt box.
  5. Tap Create.
  6. (Optional) After generating your draft, you can:
    • Send feedback about the generated text: Tap Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
    • Edit the generated text: Tap the generated text, and then make your changes.
    • Create a new version of the text: Tap Recreate .
      • Important: After creating a new version, you can’t go back to the previous version.
  7. When you’re finished, tap Insert.

Use AI to refine your draft

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose and write your message.
    • You can also reply to an email thread or open an existing draft.
  3. In the bottom right of the window, tap Help me write .
  4. Choose an option from the menu:
    • Formalize: Makes the draft more formal.
    • Elaborate: Adds details to build upon the text.
    • Shorten: Shortens the draft.
    • I'm Feeling Lucky: Updates draft with creative details.
  5. (Optional) After refining your draft, you can:
    • Send feedback about the generated text: Tap Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
    • Edit the generated text: Tap the generated text, and then make your changes.
    • Create a new version of the text: Tap Recreate .
      • Important: After creating a new version, you can’t go back to the previous generated version.
  6. Tap Replace to accept the new draft, or tap Close to keep your existing draft.

Give feedback about a draft

Gemini for Google Workspace is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.

If the generated draft is inaccurate or looks unsafe, you can let us know by submitting feedback.

  • Below the generated text, tap Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  • After you tap Bad suggestion , tap Get started.
    1. Select a feedback option in the menu, then enter your comments.
    2. Tap Submit .

Troubleshooting issues with Gemini features

  • Sometimes, you may not be able to select the Help me write button. When this happens, try again later.
  • If you're having trouble entering prompts or have issues generating drafts, try reloading your browser (if you’re on a computer) or closing and reopening the Gmail app (if you’re on Android or iOS).
  • To use Gemini features in Gmail, make sure your device language is set to English. Learn more about changing language settings.
