Create & manage labels in Gmail

To organize your emails into categories like “Work,” “Family,” or “To-Do,” you can create labels in Gmail.

Labels are different from folders. Only you can access your labels. The people you email don’t get them. When you delete an email, it’s removed from every label and your inbox.

Create a label

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu .
  3. Under "All labels," tap Create label.
  4. Enter a label name.
  5. Tap Save.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings.
  3. Select your account.
  4. Tap Manage labels.
  5. Select the label you want to edit.
  6. Tap Name.
  7. Create a new name.
  8. Tap Done.
Delete label
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings.
  3. Select your account.
  4. Tap Manage labels.
  5. Select the label you want to delete.
  6. Tap Delete.

Add a label

Add a label to one or more emails
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. Touch and hold one or more emails.
  3. At the top right, tap More and then Label as.
  4. Check the boxes next to the labels you want to add.
  5. At the bottom of the "Label as" menu, tap OK.
Move an email to another label
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. Touch and hold one or more emails.
  3. Tap More and then Move to.
  4. Choose the label you want to move the email to.

Tip: To quickly move an email to another label, you can create a swipe action.

  1. In the Gmail app, tap Menu and then Settings.
  2. Tap General settings and then Swipe actions.
  3. Next to "Right swipe" or "Left swipe," tap Change.
  4. Tap Move to.
