To organize your emails into categories like “Work,” “Family,” or “To-Do,” you can create labels in Gmail.
Labels are different from folders. Only you can access your labels. The people you email don’t get them. When you delete an email, it’s removed from every label and your inbox.
Create a label
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
.
- Under "All labels," tap Create label.
- Enter a label name.
- Tap Save.
Edit & delete labels
Edit a label- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
Settings.
- Select your account.
- Tap Manage labels.
- Select the label you want to edit.
- Tap Name.
- Create a new name.
- Tap Done.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app
.
- At the top left, tap Menu
Settings.
- Select your account.
- Tap Manage labels.
- Select the label you want to delete.
- Tap Delete.
Add a label
Add a label to one or more emails- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app
.
- Touch and hold one or more emails.
- At the top right, tap More
Label as.
- Check the boxes next to the labels you want to add.
- At the bottom of the "Label as" menu, tap OK.
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app
.
- Touch and hold one or more emails.
- Tap More
Move to.
- Choose the label you want to move the email to.
Tip: To quickly move an email to another label, you can create a swipe action.
- In the Gmail app, tap Menu

- Next to "Right swipe" or "Left swipe," tap Change.
- Tap Move to.
