Change Gmail notifications

You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you receive new emails. The types of notifications that you can customise depends on your device.

If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.

Turn on alerts

Notifications are turned on for any email messages in your primary label by default.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Notifications', tap Email notifications.
  4. Select a notification level.

Be notified about important emails

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Notifications', tap Email notifications and then High-priority only.

Turn notification sounds on or off

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the top left, tap Menu and then Settings .
  3. To change your notification sound for:
    • Emails: Under 'Notifications', tap Email notifications and then Notification sounds.
    • Chat and Spaces: Under 'Notifications', tap Chat notifications and then Notification sounds.
    • When sounds are on, the name of the sound displays.
  4. Choose the notification sound that you want to use.
  5. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.
