Change email notifications

You can turn on notifications to get alerts on your phone or computer when you get new emails.

If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.

Turn on alerts

Notifications are turned on for any email messages in your Primary label by default.

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
2. At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
3. Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications.
4. Select a notification level.

Get notified for important emails

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
2. At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
3. Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications High priority only.

Turn notification sounds on or off

1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
2. At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
3. To change your notification sound for:
   • Email: Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications Notification sounds.
   • Chat and Spaces: Under “Notifications,” tap Chat notifications Notification sounds.
   • When sounds are on, the name of the sound displays.
4. Choose the notification sound you want to use.
5. To turn off notification sounds, tap None.
