You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can customize depends on your device.

Check your device notification settings
Important: To receive Gmail notifications, turn on device notifications.
- On your iPhone or iPad, go to your device's settings.
- Check your notification settings for Gmail.
Turn Gmail notifications on or off
If you have multiple accounts in the Gmail app, you need to change this setting for each account.
Notifications are turned on for any email messages in your Primary label by default.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
- At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
- Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications.
- Select a notification level.
Get notified for important emails
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
- At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
- Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications High priority only.
Turn notification sounds on or off
- On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
- At the top left, tap Menu Settings .
- To change your notification sound for:
- Email: Under "Notifications," tap Email notifications Notification sounds.
- Chat and Spaces: Under “Notifications,” tap Chat notifications Notification sounds.
- When sounds are on, the name of the sound displays.
- Choose the notification sound you want to use.
- To turn off notification sounds, tap None.
