You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can customize depends on your device.

Turn Gmail notifications on or off
Important: To receive Gmail notifications, open your browser and sign in to Gmail.
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- In the top right, click Settings See all settings.
- Scroll down to the "Desktop notifications" section.
- Select when you want to receive notifications:
- New mail notifications on: Receive notifications when a new email arrives in your inbox or Primary tab. If you use inbox categories in Gmail, you only receive notifications about emails in your Primary tab. Learn about inbox categories.
- Important mail notifications on: Receive notifications when an important email arrives in your inbox. Learn how Gmail determines email importance.
- Mail notifications off: All email notifications are off.
- Optional: If notifications are on, next to “Mail notification sounds,” click the dropdown menu and select a sound.
- At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
