Get started with Project Genie

Important: Project Genie is only available in the US.

Project Genie is a text and image-to-world prototype designed to generate interactive environments. It's one of Google's newest Generative AI research prototypes.

Learn who can use Project Genie

Project Genie is currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers.

  • You must be 18 years of age or older.
  • You must be located in the US.

Learn how to use Project Genie

Access Project Genie

  1. Go to labs.google/fx/projectgenie.
  2. To sign in, use your personal Google Account.
    • If you're an eligible Ultra subscriber, once you sign in, you can find the Project Genie landing screen.
  3. To get started, click Create with Project Genie.
    • If you don't have access yet, you will be directed to Google Labs, where you can learn more about Project Genie.

Create your world

  1. Sketch your world in one of two ways:
    • In the text fields, describe your world's environment and character.
    • For a surprise world, click Roll the dice.
  2. Click First or Third person view.
    • To modify your sketch (optional), Add, Change, or Remove elements of the image.
  3. To generate your world, click Next.
    • Tip: Generation takes a few moments. Stay on the page, as navigation will start automatically.

Note: Since this is still an early access research prototype, you will not need to use your AI credits to generate worlds.

Navigate the world

  • Controls:
    • To move through the world, use WASD keyboard controls.
    • To jump or ascend, use Spacebar.
    • To change the orientation of the camera, use directional arrows (Keyboard arrow left. keyboard arrow down Keyboard arrow right.).
  • Duration:
    • You have 60 seconds to explore the generated world.
    • At the top of the screen, a progress bar reflects how much time you have left.

Note: Since this is an early access research prototype, sometimes actions may not work as expected.

Take post-experience actions

When the 60 second timer ends, you can:

  • Reuse your prompts: Start a new world creation with the same prompts.
  • Revisit the world: Regenerate the world with the same prompts. This can generate different results.
  • Download a video of your experience.
  • Create a completely new world.

What are the Project Genie user policies?

We want the Project Genie experience to be fun and safe. Therefore, we prohibit users from knowingly generating harmful, illegal, or inappropriate content. For example, Project Genie features precautions to protect minors and uploaded photos of people, and certain queries might not be generated. Find more details about content categories and our policies in our Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy. If you're facing difficulties or getting blocked in unexpected ways, send us your feedback.

Why did my generation fail?

Your generation may have failed for one of several reasons. For example:

  • Your inputs may have violated Google's Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.
  • An issue with Project Genie, such as too many users generating worlds at the same time. Keep trying, or come back later.

In-World frequently asked questions

Project Genie is still experimental. You may notice some things don't work as expected. Here is a FAQ based on things you may see.

Why does my character run backwards?

If this happens, try hitting the Spacebar to reset the character and regain control.

Why can I occasionally not control my character?

This occasionally happens in some worlds and is being improved. Here are a few tricks to try:

  • If you're uploading a photo, ensure your character is somewhat centered and prominent in the view.
  • If it's a real world scenario, try turning it into a more game-like version and re-try.
Why is my stream low quality?

Streaming quality may lower based on server load.

Why are the controls slow to respond?

There's a known delay (latency) between control inputs and actions; this is being improved.

Why do my streams get darker over time?

This occasionally happens and is being improved.

Why doesn't my world look like my input image?

Since Genie 3 is an early research model, the worlds and characters it generates can't always appear true-to-life or adhere closely to prompts, images, or real-world physics.
